3Solutions

1.Hydrostatic force

Answer: F = 64.38 kN

Hydrostatic force on a plane surface: F = ρ·g·yc·A. It acts at the centre of pressure, ycp = yc + Ic/(ycA), which always lies below the centroid.

Centroid depth and area

yc = d + H/2 = 0.5 + 2.5/2 = 1.75 m
A = H·b = 2.5·1.5 = 3.75 m²
gated = 0.5 mH = 2.5 mF

Resultant force

F = ρ·g·yc·A = 1000·9.81·1.75·3.75 = 64.38 kN

Answer

F = 64.38 kN
2.Hydrostatic force

Answer: F = 120.7 kN

Hydrostatic force on a plane surface: F = ρ·g·yc·A. It acts at the centre of pressure, ycp = yc + Ic/(ycA), which always lies below the centroid.

Centroid depth and area

yc = d + H/2 = 3 + 2/2 = 4 m
A = H·b = 2·1.5 = 3 m²
gated = 3 mH = 2 mF

Resultant force

F = ρ·g·yc·A = 1025·9.81·4·3 = 120.7 kN

Answer

F = 120.7 kN
3.Continuity & Bernoulli

Answer: p2 = 288.9 kPa

Continuity and Bernoulli: for an incompressible fluid the flow rate is the same at every section, Q = A₁v₁ = A₂v₂. Along a streamline without losses, p + ½ρv² + ρgz is constant, so where the fluid is faster or higher its pressure is lower.

Continuity and Bernoulli

Work in Pa, then divide by 1000 to get kPa.

v2 = v1·(d1/d2)² = 3·(75/40)² = 10.55 m/s
½ρ(v1² − v2²) = ½·1000·(3² − 10.55²)/1000 = −51.12 kPa
p2 = p1 + ½ρ(v1² − v2²) = 340 + (−51.12) = 288.9 kPa

Answer

p2 = 288.9 kPa
4.Continuity & Bernoulli

Answer: p2 = 223.2 kPa

Continuity and Bernoulli: for an incompressible fluid the flow rate is the same at every section, Q = A₁v₁ = A₂v₂. Along a streamline without losses, p + ½ρv² + ρgz is constant, so where the fluid is faster or higher its pressure is lower.

Continuity and Bernoulli

Work in Pa, then divide by 1000 to get kPa.

v2 = v1·(d1/d2)² = 1.75·(100/40)² = 10.94 m/s
½ρ(v1² − v2²) = ½·1000·(1.75² − 10.94²)/1000 = −58.28 kPa
ρgΔz = 1000·9.81·8/1000 = 78.48 kPa
p2 = p1 + ½ρ(v1² − v2²) − ρgΔz = 360 + (−58.28) − 78.48 = 223.2 kPa

Answer

p2 = 223.2 kPa
5.Pipe friction & head loss

Answer: hf = 0.2104 m

Pipe flow: the Reynolds number Re = V·D/ν = ρ·V·D/μ tells laminar flow (Re below about 2000) from turbulent flow (above about 4000). Friction along a pipe costs the Darcy–Weisbach head loss hf = f·(L/D)·V²/(2g). Fittings, valves, the entrance and the exit add minor losses hm = ΣK·V²/(2g). Between two open reservoir surfaces the energy equation gives Δz = hf + hm, with the exit loss K = 1 included.

Mean velocity

A = π·0.3²/4 = 0.07069 m²
V = Q/A = 0.075/0.07069 = 1.061 m/s

Velocity head

V²/(2g) = 1.061²/(2·9.81) = 0.05738 m

Darcy–Weisbach

hf = f·(L/D)·V²/(2g) = 0.022·(50/0.3)·1.061²/(2·9.81) = 0.2104 m

Answer

hf = 0.2104 m
6.Pipe friction & head loss

Answer: Δz = 11.06 m

Pipe flow: the Reynolds number Re = V·D/ν = ρ·V·D/μ tells laminar flow (Re below about 2000) from turbulent flow (above about 4000). Friction along a pipe costs the Darcy–Weisbach head loss hf = f·(L/D)·V²/(2g). Fittings, valves, the entrance and the exit add minor losses hm = ΣK·V²/(2g). Between two open reservoir surfaces the energy equation gives Δz = hf + hm, with the exit loss K = 1 included.

Velocity

V = Q/A = 0.2/0.07069 = 2.829 m/s
V²/(2g) = 0.408 m

Loss coefficients

f·L/D = 0.015·300/0.3 = 15
ΣK = 0.5 + 2·0.3 + 10 + 1.0 = 12.1

Total head loss

hf = 15·0.408 = 6.121 m
hm = 12.1·0.408 = 4.937 m
Δz = hf + hm = 11.06 m

Answer

Δz = 11.06 m
7.Pumps & pump power

Answer: Pshaft = 14.09 kW

Pump power: the power given to the water is the hydraulic power Ph = ρ·g·Q·H = Q·Δp. The shaft must deliver more because the pump loses some: Pshaft = Ph/ηpump, and the motor draws Pel = Pshaft/ηmotor. The pump head H follows from the energy equation: static lift + pressure head + all friction and minor losses.

Hydraulic power

Ph = ρ·g·Q·H = 1000·9.81·0.02·56 = 10.99 kW

Shaft power

Pshaft = Ph/η = 10.99/0.78 = 14.09 kW

Answer

Pshaft = 14.09 kW
