1Formulas and methods
Biology for nursing entrance exams
Method
- Name the topic of the question: cell parts, transport, division, DNA and protein synthesis, inheritance, biomolecules, microorganisms or experimental design.
- Recall the key rule: A–T and G–C, diffusion from high to low, water moves towards more solute, mitosis keeps and meiosis halves the chromosome number.
- For crosses, write the parents’ genotypes, list the gametes and fill a Punnett square before counting.
- For experiments, label the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and ask whether the evidence supports or only suggests the conclusion.
- Check each option against the question asked, not just whether it is a true statement.
Chemistry for nursing entrance exams
Method
- Identify what is given and asked: particles, a formula, a state change, a concentration, a pH or a mass.
- Use the periodic table: the atomic number gives protons, the group gives valence electrons and the usual ion charge.
- Balance equations with coefficients only, element by element, oxygen and hydrogen last.
- For amounts, go mass → moles → mole ratio → moles → mass, and for solutions use M = mol/L and C₁V₁ = C₂V₂.
- Remember that pH is logarithmic: one unit is a factor of 10.
2Practice problems
1.Human anatomyMedium
Which pulse is felt just behind the medial malleolus of the ankle?
- APosterior tibial artery
- BDorsalis pedis artery
- CFibular artery
- DPopliteal artery
2.Human anatomyHard
Why does a displaced fracture of the femoral neck carry a high risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head?
- AIt blocks the femoral vein and causes congestion
- BIt damages the sciatic nerve that controls blood flow
- CIt tears the retinacular branches of the medial circumflex femoral artery
- DIt cuts the main trunk of the femoral artery
3.Human physiologyMedium
Which hormone makes the gallbladder contract after a fatty meal?
- AGastrin
- BCholecystokinin (CCK)
- CSecretin
- DInsulin
4.Human physiologyHard
According to the length–tension relationship, why does a skeletal muscle fibre produce less force when overstretched?
- AThe neuromuscular junction stops working
- BCalcium is no longer released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum when stretched
- CThe muscle runs out of ATP when stretched
- DActin and myosin overlap less, so fewer cross-bridges form
5.Biology for nursing entrance examsMedium
Two heterozygous parents (Aa × Aa) are crossed, and A is completely dominant. What is the expected phenotype ratio?
- A3 dominant : 1 recessive
- B1 dominant : 1 recessive
- CAll dominant
- D1 dominant : 2 intermediate : 1 recessive
6.Biology for nursing entrance examsHard
A protein is 150 amino acids long. Not counting the stop codon, how many mRNA bases code for it?
- A450
- B50
- C150
- D300
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsMedium
How does an antacid tablet relieve heartburn caused by excess stomach acid?
- AIt turns the acid into a gas that is absorbed
- BIt coats the stomach and stops all acid production
- CAn acid in it lowers the stomach pH further
- DA weak base in it neutralises some of the acid
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsHard
Which sample contains the greatest number of atoms?
- A1 mol of H₂O
- B1 mol of CH₄
- C1 mol of O₂
- D1 mol of He
3Solutions
1.Human anatomy
Answer: A · Posterior tibial artery
Why this is the answer
The posterior tibial artery passes behind the medial malleolus into the sole. The dorsalis pedis pulse is felt on the top of the foot.
A · Posterior tibial artery
2.Human anatomy
Answer: C · It tears the retinacular branches of the medial circumflex femoral artery
Why this is the answer
The femoral head is supplied mainly by retinacular branches of the medial circumflex femoral artery running along the neck. A displaced neck fracture tears them and the head can die.
C · It tears the retinacular branches of the medial circumflex femoral artery
3.Human physiology
Answer: B · Cholecystokinin (CCK)
Why this is the answer
Fat and protein in the duodenum release CCK, which contracts the gallbladder and stimulates pancreatic enzyme secretion.
B · Cholecystokinin (CCK)
4.Human physiology
Answer: D · Actin and myosin overlap less, so fewer cross-bridges form
Why this is the answer
Maximum force occurs at an optimal sarcomere length with best filament overlap. Overstretching reduces overlap; too short a length makes filaments collide.
D · Actin and myosin overlap less, so fewer cross-bridges form
5.Biology for nursing entrance exams
Answer: A · 3 dominant : 1 recessive
Why this is the answer
Three of the four combinations (AA, Aa, Aa) carry at least one A and show the dominant trait; only aa shows the recessive one.
A · 3 dominant : 1 recessive
6.Biology for nursing entrance exams
Answer: A · 450
Why this is the answer
Each amino acid is coded by a three-base codon: 150 × 3 = 450 bases. The stop codon would add three more.
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams
Answer: D · A weak base in it neutralises some of the acid
Why this is the answer
Antacids contain weak bases such as calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide or aluminium hydroxide. They neutralise some HCl, raising the stomach pH and easing the burning feeling.
D · A weak base in it neutralises some of the acid
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams
Answer: B · 1 mol of CH₄
Why this is the answer
One mole of each contains 6.02 × 10²³ molecules, but each CH₄ has 5 atoms, compared with 1 in He, 2 in O₂ and 3 in H₂O.
