1Formulas and methods

Biology for nursing entrance exams

Method

  1. Name the topic of the question: cell parts, transport, division, DNA and protein synthesis, inheritance, biomolecules, microorganisms or experimental design.
  2. Recall the key rule: A–T and G–C, diffusion from high to low, water moves towards more solute, mitosis keeps and meiosis halves the chromosome number.
  3. For crosses, write the parents’ genotypes, list the gametes and fill a Punnett square before counting.
  4. For experiments, label the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and ask whether the evidence supports or only suggests the conclusion.
  5. Check each option against the question asked, not just whether it is a true statement.

Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Method

  1. Identify what is given and asked: particles, a formula, a state change, a concentration, a pH or a mass.
  2. Use the periodic table: the atomic number gives protons, the group gives valence electrons and the usual ion charge.
  3. Balance equations with coefficients only, element by element, oxygen and hydrogen last.
  4. For amounts, go mass → moles → mole ratio → moles → mass, and for solutions use M = mol/L and C₁V₁ = C₂V₂.
  5. Remember that pH is logarithmic: one unit is a factor of 10.

A tumour at the apex of the lung causes drooping of the eyelid, a small pupil and loss of sweating on the same side of the face. Which pathway is disrupted?

  1. AParasympathetic fibres of the vagus
  2. BOculomotor nerve
  3. CFacial nerve
  4. DCervical sympathetic chain
3.Human physiologyMedium

Which ion enters the cell to cause the depolarisation phase of a typical neuronal action potential?

  1. ASodium (Na⁺)
  2. BChloride (Cl⁻)
  3. CCalcium (Ca²⁺)
  4. DPotassium (K⁺)
4.Human physiologyHard

Why does breathing 100% oxygen correct hypoxaemia from a true right-to-left shunt only poorly?

  1. AThe shunted blood never comes into contact with alveolar gas
  2. BPure oxygen damages haemoglobin
  3. CThe extra oxygen is all exhaled as CO₂
  4. DShunted blood is already fully saturated
5.Biology for nursing entrance examsMedium

Why does each type of virus infect only certain kinds of cells?

  1. AIt must attach to specific receptor proteins on the cell surface
  2. BIt can only enter cells that have no nucleus
  3. CIt can only enter cells that are dividing by meiosis at that time
  4. DIt must find cells with the same DNA as its own
6.Biology for nursing entrance examsHard

Which of these is a testable hypothesis?

  1. APlants should be watered by caring people
  2. BPlants are the most beautiful living things
  3. CPlants feel happier and calmer when people talk to them every day
  4. DIf plants get more light, they will grow taller
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsMedium

What is 380 mmHg in atmospheres?

  1. A2 atm
  2. B0.5 atm
  3. C380 atm
  4. D0.38 atm
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsHard

In the reaction NH₃ + H₂O ⇌ NH₄⁺ + OH⁻, which substance acts as the Brønsted–Lowry acid?

  1. ANH₄⁺ only
  2. BOH⁻
  3. CH₂O
  4. DNH₃

3Solutions

1.Human anatomy

Answer: A · Epididymis

Why this is the answer

Sperm are made in the seminiferous tubules and then mature and are stored in the epididymis before passing into the ductus deferens.

Answer

A · Epididymis
2.Human anatomy

Answer: D · Cervical sympathetic chain

Why this is the answer

This is Horner's syndrome: ptosis, miosis and anhidrosis from interruption of sympathetic fibres, here by an apical (Pancoast) tumour pressing on the sympathetic chain.

Answer

D · Cervical sympathetic chain
3.Human physiology

Answer: A · Sodium (Na⁺)

Why this is the answer

Voltage-gated Na⁺ channels open and Na⁺ rushes in, depolarising the membrane. K⁺ outflow then repolarises it.

Answer

A · Sodium (Na⁺)
4.Human physiology

Answer: A · The shunted blood never comes into contact with alveolar gas

Why this is the answer

Shunted blood bypasses ventilated alveoli and mixes deoxygenated blood into arterial blood. Extra inspired oxygen cannot reach it, unlike in V/Q mismatch or hypoventilation.

Answer

A · The shunted blood never comes into contact with alveolar gas
5.Biology for nursing entrance exams

Answer: A · It must attach to specific receptor proteins on the cell surface

Why this is the answer

Viral surface proteins bind to particular receptor molecules on host cells. Only cells with the right receptors can be infected; for example, HIV binds the CD4 protein on helper T cells.

Answer

A · It must attach to specific receptor proteins on the cell surface
6.Biology for nursing entrance exams

Answer: D · If plants get more light, they will grow taller

Why this is the answer

A testable hypothesis predicts a measurable result. Beauty, what people should do and the feelings of plants cannot be measured in an experiment.

Answer

D · If plants get more light, they will grow taller
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Answer: B · 0.5 atm

Why this is the answer

380 mmHg ÷ 760 mmHg/atm = 0.5 atm. This is about the air pressure near the top of a very high mountain.

Answer

B · 0.5 atm
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Answer: C · H₂O

Why this is the answer

Water donates H⁺ to ammonia, turning into OH⁻, so water is the acid in the forward reaction and NH₃ is the base. NH₄⁺ and OH⁻ are the conjugate acid and conjugate base.

Answer

C · H₂O
