3Solutions

1.Ideal gas law

Answer: V = 180.8 L

Ideal gas law: PV = nRT, with n = m/M.

Moles

n = 70/4.003 = 17.49 mol
T = 100 + 273.15 = 373.1 K

Volume

V = nRT/P = 17.49·8.314·373.1/300 = 180.8 L

Answer

V = 180.8 L
2.Ideal gas law

Answer: V2 = 2.451 L

Combined gas law: for a fixed amount of ideal gas, P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2.

Absolute temperatures

T1 = 288.1 K, T2 = 353.1 K

Combined gas law

V2 = V1·(P1/P2)·(T2/T1) = 2·(250/250)·(353.1/288.1) = 2.451 L

Answer

V2 = 2.451 L
3.Energy balance

Answer: tout = 51.84 °C

Exchanger energy balance: with no losses, ṁhcp,h(Th,in − Th,out) = ṁccp,c(tout − tin).

Heat released by the hot stream

Q = 1·2.1·(170 − 60) = 231 kW

Heat picked up by the water

tout = tin + Q/(ṁccp,c) = 15 + 231/(1.5·4.18) = 51.84 °C

Answer

tout = 51.84 °C
4.Energy balance

Answer: ṁc = 1.356 kg/s

Energy balance with losses: heat released = heat absorbed + heat lost.

Heat released

Qh = 1.5·2.1·(150 − 110) = 126 kW

Heat that reaches the water

Qc = (1 − 0.1)·126 = 113.4 kW

Water flow rate

ṁc = Qc/(cp,c·Δt) = 113.4/(4.18·20) = 1.356 kg/s

Answer

ṁc = 1.356 kg/s
5.Heat engines & refrigerators

Answer: Q̇H = 5.732 kW

Second-law limits: no cycle working between reservoirs at absolute temperatures TH and TL can beat the reversible (Carnot) cycle: ηmax = 1 − TL/TH, COPR,max = TL/(TH − TL) and COPHP,max = TH/(TH − TL). Energy is always conserved: QH = W + QL.

Absolute temperatures

TH = 40 + 273.15 = 313.1 K
TL = 0 + 273.15 = 273.1 K

Reversible heat ratio

Q̇H = Q̇L·TH/TL = 5·313.1/273.1 = 5.732 kW

Answer

Q̇H = 5.732 kW

Power input: Ẇ = 0.7322 kW.

6.Heat engines & refrigerators

Answer: Sgen = 1.437 kJ/K

Entropy generation: over a full cycle the working fluid has no net entropy change. The hot reservoir loses QH/TH and the cold reservoir gains QL/TL. Their sum is the entropy generated, which is zero for a reversible cycle and positive for every real one.

Heat rejected

QL = QH − W = 3400 − 1768 = 1632 kJ

Absolute temperatures

TH = 550 + 273.15 = 823.1 K
TL = 20 + 273.15 = 293.1 K

Entropy changes of the reservoirs

ΔSH = −3400/823.1 = −4.13 kJ/K
ΔSL = 1632/293.1 = 5.567 kJ/K
Sgen = 5.567 − 4.13 = 1.437 kJ/K

Answer

Sgen = 1.437 kJ/K

Sgen > 0, so the engine is possible but irreversible.

7.Gas power cycles

Answer: T3 = 1329 K

Diesel cycle (compression-ignition engine): 1→2 isentropic compression, 2→3 heat addition at constant pressure, 3→4 isentropic expansion, 4→1 heat rejection at constant volume. With compression ratio r = v₁/v₂ and cutoff ratio rc = v₃/v₂: T₂ = T₁·rk−1, T₃ = rc·T₂, qin = cp·(T₃ − T₂) and η = 1 − (1/rk−1)·(rck − 1)/(k·(rc − 1)).

End of compression

T2 = 300·150.4 = 886.3 K

Heat addition at constant pressure

T3 = rc·T2 = 1.5·886.3 = 1329 K

Answer

T3 = 1329 K
8.Gas power cycles

Answer: η = 57.51 %

Brayton cycle (gas turbine): 1→2 isentropic compression, 2→3 heat addition at constant pressure, 3→4 isentropic expansion in the turbine, 4→1 heat rejection at constant pressure. With pressure ratio rp = P₂/P₁: T₂ = T₁·rp(k−1)/k, T₄ = T₃/rp(k−1)/k and η = 1 − 1/rp(k−1)/k. Net work w = cp·[(T₃ − T₄) − (T₂ − T₁)]. With isentropic efficiencies, the compressor needs ws/ηc and the turbine gives ηt·ws.

Thermal efficiency

η = 1 − 1/200.2857 = 1 − 1/2.354 = 57.51%

Answer

η = 57.51%
