3Solutions

1.Ideal gas law

Answer: V = 27.11 L

Ideal gas law: PV = nRT, with n = m/M.

Moles

n = 230/44.01 = 5.226 mol
T = 70 + 273.15 = 343.1 K

Volume

V = nRT/P = 5.226·8.314·343.1/550 = 27.11 L

Answer

V = 27.11 L
2.Ideal gas law

Answer: ρ = 2.978 kg/m³

Ideal gas density: ρ = PM/(RT).

Rearrange the gas law

PV = (m/M)RT → ρ = m/V = PM/(RT)
T = 50 + 273.15 = 323.1 K

Density

ρ = 250·32/(8.314·323.1) = 2.978 kg/m³

Answer

ρ = 2.978 kg/m³
3.Energy balance

Answer: tout = 43.35 °C

Exchanger energy balance: with no losses, ṁhcp,h(Th,in − Th,out) = ṁccp,c(tout − tin).

Heat released by the hot stream

Q = 3·2.44·(170 − 130) = 292.8 kW

Heat picked up by the water

tout = tin + Q/(ṁccp,c) = 20 + 292.8/(3·4.18) = 43.35 °C

Answer

tout = 43.35 °C
4.Energy balance

Answer: ṁc = 0.8541 kg/s

Energy balance with losses: heat released = heat absorbed + heat lost.

Heat released

Qh = 1·2.1·(120 − 70) = 105 kW

Heat that reaches the water

Qc = (1 − 0.15)·105 = 89.25 kW

Water flow rate

ṁc = Qc/(cp,c·Δt) = 89.25/(4.18·25) = 0.8541 kg/s

Answer

ṁc = 0.8541 kg/s
5.Heat engines & refrigerators

Answer: Wmax = 2446 kJ

Second-law limits: no cycle working between reservoirs at absolute temperatures TH and TL can beat the reversible (Carnot) cycle: ηmax = 1 − TL/TH, COPR,max = TL/(TH − TL) and COPHP,max = TH/(TH − TL). Energy is always conserved: QH = W + QL.

Absolute temperatures

TH = 750 + 273.15 = 1023 K
TL = 35 + 273.15 = 308.1 K

Carnot efficiency

ηmax = 1 − TL/TH = 1 − 308.1/1023 = 69.88 %

Maximum work

Wmax = ηmax·QH = 0.6988·3500 = 2446 kJ

Answer

Wmax = 2446 kJ
6.Heat engines & refrigerators

Answer: Ẇ = 5.028 kW

Second-law limits: no cycle working between reservoirs at absolute temperatures TH and TL can beat the reversible (Carnot) cycle: ηmax = 1 − TL/TH, COPR,max = TL/(TH − TL) and COPHP,max = TH/(TH − TL). Energy is always conserved: QH = W + QL.

Absolute temperatures

TH = 55 + 273.15 = 328.1 K
TL = 0 + 273.15 = 273.1 K

Carnot and actual COP

COPmax = 328.1/(328.1 − 273.1) = 5.966
COP = 0.5·5.966 = 2.983

Power input

Ẇ = Q̇H/COP = 15/2.983 = 5.028 kW

Answer

Ẇ = 5.028 kW

Answer: η = 54.71 %

Brayton cycle (gas turbine): 1→2 isentropic compression, 2→3 heat addition at constant pressure, 3→4 isentropic expansion in the turbine, 4→1 heat rejection at constant pressure. With isentropic efficiencies, the compressor needs ws/ηc and the turbine gives ηt·ws.

Thermal efficiency

η = 1 − 1/160.2857 = 1 − 1/2.208 = 54.71%

Answer

η = 54.71%
