Method

  1. Identify the kind of problem: wave speed, sound level, standing wave, Doppler, refraction, lens or mirror, or interference.
  2. Write the relation first: v = fλ, β = 10·log(I/I₀), fₙ = n·v/(2L) or n·v/(4L), f′ = f(v ± vo)/(v ∓ vs), n₁sin θ₁ = n₂sin θ₂, 1/f = 1/d₀ + 1/dᵢ, d·sin θ = mλ.
  3. Convert units: nm, mm and cm to m, and check whether angles are measured from the normal.
  4. Check signs and plausibility: a virtual image has dᵢ < 0, an approaching source sounds higher, a closed pipe has only odd harmonics.

2Practice problems

1.Springs & pendulumsMedium
1.9 kgk = 80 N/mA = 7 cmx = 1 cm

A 1.9 kg mass on a spring with k = 80 N/m oscillates on a frictionless surface with an amplitude of 7 cm. Find its speed v when it is 1 cm from equilibrium.

m = 1.9 kgk = 80 N/mA = 7 cmx = 1 cm
v = m/s
2.Springs & pendulumsHard
3 kgk = 220 N/m

A 3 kg mass is attached to the lower end of an unstretched vertical spring with k = 220 N/m and released from rest. Use g = 9.81 m/s². Find the greatest speed vmax of the mass.

m = 3 kgk = 220 N/mg = 9.81 m/s²
vmax = m/s

75 dB?2 m4 m

A small source sends sound equally in all directions. The level is 75 dB at 2 m from it. Find the level β2 at 4 m, ignoring absorption and reflections.

β1 = 75 dBr1 = 2 mr2 = 4 m

Light of wavelength 600 nm falls at right angles on a grating with 600 lines per millimetre. Find the angle θ1 of the order-1 maximum.

N = 600 mm⁻¹λ = 600 nmm = 1
θ1 = °

3Solutions

1.Springs & pendulums

Answer: v = 0.4496 m/s

Simple harmonic motion: a mass m on a spring of stiffness k oscillates with angular frequency ω = √(k/m) and period T = 2π/ω = 2π·√(m/k). A simple pendulum of length L has T = 2π·√(L/g). With amplitude A, the largest speed is A·ω, the largest acceleration A·ω² and the energy ½·k·A².

Angular frequency

ω = √(80/1.9) = 6.489 rad/s

Speed at x

v = ω·√(A² − x²) = 6.489·√(0.07² − 0.01²) = 0.4496 m/s

Answer

v = 0.4496 m/s
2.Springs & pendulums

Answer: vmax = 1.146 m/s

Simple harmonic motion: a mass m on a spring of stiffness k oscillates with angular frequency ω = √(k/m) and period T = 2π/ω = 2π·√(m/k). A simple pendulum of length L has T = 2π·√(L/g). With amplitude A, the largest speed is A·ω, the largest acceleration A·ω² and the energy ½·k·A².

Equilibrium and amplitude

x₀ = m·g/k = 3·9.81/220 = 0.1338 m = A

Greatest speed

The speed is largest at equilibrium.

ω = √(220/3) = 8.563 rad/s
vmax = A·ω = 0.1338·8.563 = 1.146 m/s

Answer

vmax = 1.146 m/s
3.Waves, sound & optics

Answer: β2 = 68.98 dB

Waves: a periodic wave moves one wavelength in one period, so v = fλ with T = 1/f. On a stretched string v = √(T/μ), with T the tension and μ = m/L the mass per metre. Sound in air travels at about 343 m/s at 20 °C, light in vacuum at c = 3.00 × 10⁸ m/s. Loudness is measured on a logarithmic scale: β = 10·log₁₀(I/I₀) dB with I₀ = 10⁻¹² W/m², so 10 times the intensity adds 10 dB. A point source spreads its power P over a sphere: I = P/(4πr²).

Intensity ratio

I₂/I₁ = (2/4)² = 0.25

New level

β₂ = 75 + 10·log₁₀(0.25) = 68.98 dB

Answer

β2 = 68.98 dB

Every doubling of the distance lowers the level by about 6 dB.

4.Waves, sound & optics

Answer: θ1 = 21.1 °

Interference and diffraction: light from two slits a distance d apart reaches a point on the screen with a path difference d·sin θ. Bright fringes appear where d·sin θ = mλ (m = 0, ±1, ±2, …). For a screen at distance L ≫ d, the m-th bright fringe is at y = mλL/d and the fringe spacing is Δy = λL/d. A grating with N lines per millimetre has d = 1/N and sharp maxima at d·sin θ = mλ; since sin θ ≤ 1, the highest order is the largest whole number m ≤ d/λ. A single slit of width a has dark fringes at a·sin θ = mλ, m = ±1, ±2, …

Line spacing

d = 1/600 mm = 1.667 × 10⁻⁶ m

Grating equation

sin θ = mλ/d = 1·600 × 10⁻⁹/(1.667 × 10⁻⁶) = 0.36
θ = 21.1°

Answer

θ1 = 21.1°
