Method

  1. Identify the kind of problem: wave speed, sound level, standing wave, Doppler, refraction, lens or mirror, or interference.
  2. Write the relation first: v = fλ, β = 10·log(I/I₀), fₙ = n·v/(2L) or n·v/(4L), f′ = f(v ± vo)/(v ∓ vs), n₁sin θ₁ = n₂sin θ₂, 1/f = 1/d₀ + 1/dᵢ, d·sin θ = mλ.
  3. Convert units: nm, mm and cm to m, and check whether angles are measured from the normal.
  4. Check signs and plausibility: a virtual image has dᵢ < 0, an approaching source sounds higher, a closed pipe has only odd harmonics.

2Practice problems

1.Springs & pendulumsMedium
L = 1.3 mT = 1.44 s

An astronaut on another planet finds that a simple pendulum 1.3 m long has a period of 1.44 s for small swings. Find the gravitational acceleration g on that planet.

L = 1.3 mT = 1.44 s
g = m/s²
2.Springs & pendulumsHard
0.6 kgk = 500 N/m

A 0.6 kg mass is attached to the lower end of an unstretched vertical spring with k = 500 N/m and released from rest. Use g = 9.81 m/s². Find the greatest extension xmax of the spring in cm.

m = 0.6 kgk = 500 N/mg = 9.81 m/s²
xmax = cm
3.Waves, sound & opticsMedium
65 dB?10 m30 m

A small source sends sound equally in all directions. The level is 65 dB at 10 m from it. Find the level β2 at 30 m, ignoring absorption and reflections.

β1 = 65 dBr1 = 10 mr2 = 30 m
β2 = dB
4.Waves, sound & opticsHard
λ = ?31.7°

A grating with 800 lines per millimetre shows the order-1 maximum of a spectral line at 31.7° from the straight-through direction. Find the wavelength λ of the line.

N = 800 mm⁻¹θ1 = 31.7°m = 1
λ = nm

3Solutions

1.Springs & pendulums

Answer: g = 24.75 m/s²

Simple harmonic motion: a mass m on a spring of stiffness k oscillates with angular frequency ω = √(k/m) and period T = 2π/ω = 2π·√(m/k). A simple pendulum of length L has T = 2π·√(L/g). With amplitude A, the largest speed is A·ω, the largest acceleration A·ω² and the energy ½·k·A².

Solve for g

g = 4π²·L/T² = 4π²·1.3/1.44² = 24.75 m/s²

Answer

g = 24.75 m/s²
2.Springs & pendulums

Answer: xmax = 2.354 cm

Simple harmonic motion: a mass m on a spring of stiffness k oscillates with angular frequency ω = √(k/m) and period T = 2π/ω = 2π·√(m/k). A simple pendulum of length L has T = 2π·√(L/g). With amplitude A, the largest speed is A·ω, the largest acceleration A·ω² and the energy ½·k·A².

Equilibrium and amplitude

x₀ = m·g/k = 0.6·9.81/500 = 0.01177 m = A

Lowest point

xmax = 2A = 0.02354 m = 2.354 cm

Answer

xmax = 2.354 cm
3.Waves, sound & optics

Answer: β2 = 55.46 dB

Waves: a periodic wave moves one wavelength in one period, so v = fλ with T = 1/f. On a stretched string v = √(T/μ), with T the tension and μ = m/L the mass per metre. Sound in air travels at about 343 m/s at 20 °C, light in vacuum at c = 3.00 × 10⁸ m/s. Loudness is measured on a logarithmic scale: β = 10·log₁₀(I/I₀) dB with I₀ = 10⁻¹² W/m², so 10 times the intensity adds 10 dB. A point source spreads its power P over a sphere: I = P/(4πr²).

Intensity ratio

I₂/I₁ = (10/30)² = 0.1111

New level

β₂ = 65 + 10·log₁₀(0.1111) = 55.46 dB

Answer

β2 = 55.46 dB

Every doubling of the distance lowers the level by about 6 dB.

4.Waves, sound & optics

Answer: λ = 656.8 nm

Interference and diffraction: light from two slits a distance d apart reaches a point on the screen with a path difference d·sin θ. Bright fringes appear where d·sin θ = mλ (m = 0, ±1, ±2, …). For a screen at distance L ≫ d, the m-th bright fringe is at y = mλL/d and the fringe spacing is Δy = λL/d. A grating with N lines per millimetre has d = 1/N and sharp maxima at d·sin θ = mλ; since sin θ ≤ 1, the highest order is the largest whole number m ≤ d/λ. A single slit of width a has dark fringes at a·sin θ = mλ, m = ±1, ±2, …

Wavelength

λ = d·sin θ/m = 1.25 × 10⁻⁶·sin 31.7°/1 = 656.8 nm

Answer

λ = 656.8 nm
