C · To convince officials to improve hospital conditions
The passage says she used the evidence to persuade the government to improve sanitation in hospitals.
B · To stop expectations from affecting the results
Keeping both groups unaware (a double-blind design) prevents expectations of volunteers or researchers from biasing the results.
D · It gives a large surface area for gas exchange
The biconcave shape increases surface area relative to volume and keeps the distance for diffusion short. It also makes the cells flexible enough to squeeze through narrow capillaries.
B · A virus
Viruses are much smaller than bacteria, so they pass through bacterial filters. They cannot grow on non-living media because they need a host cell's machinery to reproduce.
A · Lower temperatures slow down chemical and microbial reactions
At lower temperatures, fewer particles have enough energy to react, and microbial enzymes work slowly. Spoilage reactions therefore happen more slowly. The activation energy itself does not change.
答え: D · 200 mL
10% × 50 mL = 2% × V₂, so V₂ = 250 mL. That is the final volume, so the water to add is 250 − 50 = 200 mL. Answering 250 mL forgets the starting volume.
答え: D · of
The fixed expression is “capable of” + noun or -ing form.
B · whom
In the clause “the manager will choose him/her”, the pronoun is the object of “choose”, so the object form “whom” is correct.
A · Move into a new position
To reposition is to change a person’s position, for example from lying on the back to lying on the side.
D · Paralysis of one side of the body
Hemiplegia affects one side (half) of the body. Quadriplegia (tetraplegia) affects all four limbs and paraplegia the legs.
