Ana’s plan was mocked, but years later it saved the village. The theme is that long-term effort can prove valuable.
米国の慣用単位:1 ft = 12 in、1 yd = 3 ft、1 mi = 5280 ft、1 gal = 4 qt、1 qt = 2 pt、1 pt = 2 cups、1 ton = 2000 lb。時間:1 h = 60 min、1 min = 60 s、1 day = 24 h、1 week = 7 days。
B · They share a common ancestor
Homologous structures have the same basic plan because they were inherited from a common ancestor, even if they now do different jobs. They are evidence of evolution.
D · She may have made anti-D antibodies that cross the placenta
Exposure to the baby's RhD-positive cells can sensitise the mother, so she makes anti-D antibodies. In a later pregnancy these can cross the placenta and destroy the baby's red cells (haemolytic disease of the newborn). Anti-D immunoglobulin is given to prevent sensitisation.
D · Estimating the age of material that was once alive
Living organisms take in carbon-14 while alive. After death it decays with a half-life of about 5700 years, so the remaining carbon-14 shows roughly how long ago the organism died. It is not useful for very old rocks.
B · Oxygen from the air has combined with the magnesium
2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO. The ash includes oxygen atoms taken from the air, so it weighs more than the magnesium alone. In a closed system, total mass would not change.
A · has lived
“Since 2015” with an action that continues to the present needs the present perfect: has lived.
B · The instructor taught nearly 40 students.
“Nearly 40 students” means about 40. “Nearly taught” means the teaching almost happened but did not.
A · A drug that reduces fever
An antipyretic is a medicine that lowers a raised body temperature.
