In gel electrophoresis, why does DNA move towards the positive electrode?
A plant that is AaBb is crossed with an AaBB plant. A and B are dominant, and the genes assort independently. What fraction of the offspring show both dominant traits?
Why does water boil at a lower temperature at the top of a high mountain?
Which coefficients balance the equation for cellular respiration, __C₆H₁₂O₆ + __O₂ → __CO₂ + __H₂O?
Choose the correct pronoun: “The award went to Jamal and ___.”
Which sentence uses a dash correctly?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The rash was symmetric.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “After the stroke, the patient’s gait was unsteady.”
A · The runners finished even though the weather was bad.
“Despite” shows something happened even though there was an obstacle, here the heavy rain.
B · They acted quickly before help arrived.
Compressions had started and the defibrillator had been fetched before the ambulance arrived, so they acted quickly.
A · DNA has a negative charge from its phosphate groups
The phosphate groups in the DNA backbone are negatively charged, so DNA moves towards the positive electrode. Small fragments move through the gel more easily than large ones.
答え: D · 3/4
Bb × BB gives all offspring with at least one B, so 1 for trait B. Aa × Aa gives 3/4 with at least one A. 3/4 × 1 = 3/4 show both dominant traits.
A · The air pressure is lower, so less vapour pressure is needed to boil
At high altitude the atmospheric pressure is lower, so water's vapour pressure reaches it at a lower temperature. Water therefore boils below 100 °C, and food takes longer to cook.
答え: B · 1, 6, 6, 6
6 C gives 6CO₂; 12 H gives 6H₂O. Oxygen on the right is 12 + 6 = 18; glucose supplies 6, so 12 more from 6O₂. C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O.
C · her
“The award went to her” is correct; after the preposition “to” the object form is needed.
C · She had one goal — to pass the exam.
A dash can introduce an explanation of what comes before it, here what the one goal was.
C · The same on both sides
Symmetric means matching on both sides of a dividing line.
B · Manner of walking
Gait is the way a person walks, and an unsteady gait increases the risk of falls.
