Why do the palisade cells near the top surface of a leaf contain many chloroplasts?
- AThey get the most light and do most of the photosynthesis
- BThey carry sugars from the leaves down to the roots
- CThey store most of the plant's water for dry periods
- DThey protect the leaf from insects and strong winds
At dawn, a plant shows no overall uptake or release of oxygen or carbon dioxide. What is the best explanation?
- AIt has stopped both photosynthesis and respiration until it is light
- BIts stomata are permanently closed at dawn
- CIts rate of photosynthesis equals its rate of respiration
- DIt only respires at dawn
Which gas forms when hydrochloric acid reacts with calcium carbonate?
- AOxygen
- BChlorine
- CHydrogen
- DCarbon dioxide
Why are the radioactive tracers used for medical imaging usually chosen to have short half-lives?
- AShort half-life isotopes are not radioactive
- BThey stay active for many years, so a single dose can be used for every future scan
- CThey give a strong signal for imaging but leave the body's tissues exposed only briefly
- DThey emit only alpha particles, which are harmless inside the body
A · They get the most light and do most of the photosynthesis
Palisade cells lie just below the upper surface, where light is strongest. Packing them with chloroplasts lets the leaf capture as much light as possible for photosynthesis.
A · They get the most light and do most of the photosynthesis
C · Its rate of photosynthesis equals its rate of respiration
At low light, the gas made by photosynthesis is exactly used by respiration, and vice versa. This is the compensation point. In brighter light, photosynthesis is faster and the plant releases oxygen overall.
C · Its rate of photosynthesis equals its rate of respiration
D · Carbon dioxide
Acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide: CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂. Hydrogen forms when acids react with reactive metals instead.
C · They give a strong signal for imaging but leave the body's tissues exposed only briefly
A short half-life means the tracer is active long enough for the scan and then quickly decays, which limits the patient's total radiation dose. Gamma emitters are preferred because gamma rays escape the body to reach the camera.
C · They give a strong signal for imaging but leave the body's tissues exposed only briefly
