“Unlike typical classrooms, the new science lab has movable tables, large screens on every wall and sinks at each station.” What is the author mainly doing in this sentence?
The writer argues: “We should not build the new road. It will destroy the old forest, and the traffic it saves will last only until more cars fill it.” Which piece of evidence would most strengthen the writer’s argument?
Choose the correct verb: “The pair of gloves ___ on the cart.”
Which sentence uses a pronoun with a clear antecedent?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The pupils dilate in the dark.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “After the loss, the patient showed marked apathy.”
답: A · Contrasting the lab with typical classrooms
“Unlike” signals a contrast. The sentence shows how the new lab differs from typical classrooms.
답: C · Studies showing new roads often fill with more traffic
Evidence that new roads tend to attract more traffic directly supports the writer’s claim that any time saved would not last. A forest that few people visit would, if anything, weaken the case.
답: B · is
“Pair” is singular, so it takes “is”. The phrase “of gloves” does not change the subject.
답: D · When Ana met Lena, Ana gave her a gift.
In the other sentences “she” could mean Ana or Lena. Repeating the name removes the ambiguity.
답: D · Become wider
To dilate is to widen or open up; pupils dilate to let in more light.
답: A · Lack of interest or emotion
Apathy is a lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern.
