A thermometer reading of 39 °C (102.2 °F) is described as a high fever in the nurse’s notes. The next morning, the reading is 37 °C (98.6 °F). What does this suggest?
The author writes: “Our survey found that 9 out of 10 dentists recommend chewing gum.” The survey was paid for by a chewing gum company and asked only 10 dentists. Why should a reader be cautious about this claim?
Which sentence uses a reflexive pronoun correctly?
Which sentence contains a squinting (ambiguous) modifier?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The toddler may have ingested a cleaning product.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The patient’s seizures were refractory to standard treatment.”
답: C · The patient’s fever has come down.
The temperature fell from 39 °C (a high fever) to 37 °C, which is close to normal, so the fever has come down.
답: B · The sample is tiny and the sponsor has an interest.
A sample of 10 is too small to generalise from, and a gum company has a reason to want a positive result, so the claim may be biased.
답: A · She reminded herself to drink water.
“Herself” refers back to the subject “she”. In the other sentences there is no matching subject, so “me” or “I” is needed instead of “myself”.
답: A · Students who study often get good grades.
In A, “often” could modify “study” or “get”, so the meaning is unclear. Moving the modifier, as in C, removes the ambiguity.
답: C · Swallowed
To ingest is to take something into the body by swallowing it.
답: B · Not responding
Refractory means resistant to treatment or not responding to it.
