A portable x-ray is taken at the bedside. Which action protects the nurse?
ALook directly at the x-ray tube during the exposure to check its position
BStay close to the patient to keep them still without protection
CStand next to the patient and hold the film without protection
DStep away from the patient or wear a lead apron during the exposure
A visitor is receiving an electric shock from a faulty lamp and is still touching it. What should the nurse do first?
ASwitch off the power or unplug the lamp without touching the person
BThrow water over the lamp to stop the current
CPull the visitor away from the lamp by the arm as quickly as possible
DStart chest compressions straight away
When are non-sterile gloves needed?
AFor every patient contact, including taking a pulse or blood pressure
BOnly when the patient is known to have an infection
COnly when handling medicines
DWhen contact with blood, body fluids or broken skin is expected
A patient taking furosemide has a serum potassium of 3,0 mmol/L (3,0 mEq/L). Why is this important?
ALow potassium only causes mild thirst
BThe level is normal and needs no action
CLoop diuretics cause potassium loss, and low levels can cause arrhythmias
DFurosemide raises potassium, so this level is falsely low and can be ignored
AStreptococcus pyogenes
BClostridium tetani
CHelicobacter pylori
DPseudomonas aeruginosa
D · Step away from the patient or wear a lead apron during the exposure
Radiation exposure falls quickly with distance. Staff leave the immediate area or wear a lead apron, and anyone who must hold a patient wears protective clothing.
D · Step away from the patient or wear a lead apron during the exposure
A · Switch off the power or unplug the lamp without touching the person
The rescuer must not touch someone still in contact with live current. The power is switched off or the plug pulled first, then the person is assessed and resuscitation is started if needed.
A · Switch off the power or unplug the lamp without touching the person
D · When contact with blood, body fluids or broken skin is expected
Under standard precautions, gloves are worn when exposure to blood or body fluids is likely. Wearing them for all contact gives false security and can spread germs if not changed.
D · When contact with blood, body fluids or broken skin is expected
C · Loop diuretics cause potassium loss, and low levels can cause arrhythmias
Furosemide increases potassium loss in the urine. Hypokalaemia causes muscle weakness and cardiac arrhythmias, so the result is reported and replacement considered.
C · Loop diuretics cause potassium loss, and low levels can cause arrhythmias
D · Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Pseudomonas aeruginosa —
D · Pseudomonas aeruginosa
