1.Easy
R1 = 5 Ω+−V115 VR24 ΩAIs2 A

Use superposition to find the node voltage VA (measured from ground).

V1 = 15 VIs = 2 AR1 = 5 ΩR2 = 4 Ω
VA = V
2.Easy
R1 = 12 Ω+−V120 VR25 ΩIR2AIs2 A

Use superposition to find the current IR2 through R2 in the direction of the arrow.

V1 = 20 VIs = 2 AR1 = 12 ΩR2 = 5 Ω
IR2 = A
3.Medium
R1 = 4 ΩIR1R3 = 5 Ω+−V115 VR24 ΩAR44 ΩBIs2 A

Use superposition to find the current IR1 through R1 in the direction of the arrow.

V1 = 15 VIs = 2 AR1 = 4 ΩR2 = 4 ΩR3 = 5 ΩR4 = 4 Ω
IR1 = A
4.Medium
R1 = 4 ΩR3 = 10 ΩIR3+−V112 VR220 ΩAR45 ΩBIs1.5 A

Use superposition to find the current IR3 through R3 in the direction of the arrow.

V1 = 12 VIs = 1.5 AR1 = 4 ΩR2 = 20 ΩR3 = 10 ΩR4 = 5 Ω
IR3 = A
5.Hard
R1 = 25 ΩR2 = 2 ΩR4 = 25 Ω+−V115 VR310 ΩIR3AIs1.5 AB+−V25 V

Use superposition to find the power PR3 absorbed by R3.

V1 = 15 VIs = 1.5 AV2 = 5 VR1 = 25 ΩR2 = 2 ΩR3 = 10 ΩR4 = 25 Ω
PR3 = W

linear circuitV1V2IsIRL

A linear resistive circuit contains three independent sources: V1, V2 and Is. The current I through a load is measured three times. With all sources at their normal values, I = 2.5 mA. With V1 doubled and the other two unchanged, I = 4.5 mA. With the direction of Is reversed and the other two unchanged, I = 23.5 mA. Find the load current I when V2 is switched off and V1 and Is have their normal values.

normal: I = 2.5 mA2·V1: I = 4.5 mA−Is: I = 23.5 mA
I = mA

Answer key

  1. 1. VA = 11.11 V
  2. 2. IR2 = 2.588 A
  3. 3. IR1 = −1.852 A
  4. 4. IR3 = 0.1364 A
  5. 5. PR3 = 15.08 W
  6. 6. I = −8.5 mA
