TEAS-style English and reading practice questions

Practice for the reading and the English and language usage sections of nursing school entrance tests such as the ATI TEAS. Reading questions use short original passages, notices, labels and tables and ask about the main idea, details, inferences, sequence, the author’s purpose and tone, and fact versus opinion. English questions cover parts of speech, subject–verb agreement, pronouns, verb tenses, punctuation, sentence structure, spelling, commonly confused words and formal register. Vocabulary questions practise meaning from context and the prefixes, roots and suffixes of healthcare words.

About the exam and how to practise

The passages here are short and written for practice; the real test may use longer texts and more than one question per passage, but the skills are the same. Read the explanation after every question: it shows the clue in the passage or the grammar rule behind the answer. Check the exam organisation’s candidate information for the current content outline.

Exam tips for TEAS-style English & reading practice

  • Read the question before the passage so you know what to look for.
  • Watch for not, except, only and always in reading questions.
  • For grammar, find the subject and the verb first, then check agreement and punctuation.
  • Break unfamiliar words into prefix, root and suffix.

How practising works

  • “Practise this course” mixes problems from all its topics, like a real exam.
  • Every problem has new values, so you learn the method instead of an answer.
  • Stuck? Open a small hint first, and the full explanation only when you need it.
  • Mock exams are timed and have no hints, and you get your score and a full review at the end.
