1Formulas and methods

Biology for nursing entrance exams

Method

  1. Name the topic of the question: cell parts, transport, division, DNA and protein synthesis, inheritance, biomolecules, microorganisms or experimental design.
  2. Recall the key rule: A–T and G–C, diffusion from high to low, water moves towards more solute, mitosis keeps and meiosis halves the chromosome number.
  3. For crosses, write the parents’ genotypes, list the gametes and fill a Punnett square before counting.
  4. For experiments, label the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and ask whether the evidence supports or only suggests the conclusion.
  5. Check each option against the question asked, not just whether it is a true statement.

Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Method

  1. Identify what is given and asked: particles, a formula, a state change, a concentration, a pH or a mass.
  2. Use the periodic table: the atomic number gives protons, the group gives valence electrons and the usual ion charge.
  3. Balance equations with coefficients only, element by element, oxygen and hydrogen last.
  4. For amounts, go mass → moles → mole ratio → moles → mass, and for solutions use M = mol/L and C₁V₁ = C₂V₂.
  5. Remember that pH is logarithmic: one unit is a factor of 10.

  1. ABridging cerebral veins
  2. BMiddle cerebral artery
  3. CSuperficial temporal artery
  4. DMiddle meningeal artery
3.Human physiologyMedium

What causes the first heart sound (S1)?

  1. AClosure of the aortic and pulmonary valves
  2. BOpening of the aortic valve
  3. CClosure of the mitral and tricuspid valves
  4. DBlood filling the atria
4.Human physiologyHard

After several days of persistent vomiting of stomach contents, which acid–base disturbance is most likely?

  1. ARespiratory alkalosis
  2. BMetabolic alkalosis
  3. CMetabolic acidosis
  4. DRespiratory acidosis
5.Biology for nursing entrance examsMedium

In which phase of mitosis do the chromosomes condense and the nuclear envelope break down?

  1. AMetaphase
  2. BAnaphase
  3. CTelophase
  4. DProphase
6.Biology for nursing entrance examsHard

How does a population of bacteria become resistant to an antibiotic?

  1. AThe patient's immune system makes the bacteria resistant
  2. BA few bacteria already carry resistance genes, survive the drug and multiply
  3. CThe antibiotic deliberately creates the exact mutation the bacteria need
  4. DEach bacterium learns to resist the drug after being exposed
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsMedium

How does ionisation energy (the energy needed to remove an outer electron) generally change from left to right across a period?

  1. AIt decreases
  2. BIt stays the same
  3. CIt first falls, then rises sharply
  4. DIt increases
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsHard

Why does atomic radius decrease from left to right across a period?

  1. ANeutrons push the electrons outward less strongly
  2. BMore protons pull the electrons of the same outer shell closer
  3. CEach element adds a new electron shell
  4. DThe atoms lose electrons across the period

3Solutions

1.Human anatomy

Answer: D · Thoracic and upper lumbar (T1–L2)

Why this is the answer

Sympathetic preganglionic neurons lie in the lateral horn from T1 to L2. The parasympathetic system has a craniosacral outflow.

Answer

D · Thoracic and upper lumbar (T1–L2)
2.Human anatomy

Answer: D · Middle meningeal artery

Why this is the answer

The middle meningeal artery lies under the pterion, where the skull is thin. Its rupture bleeds between bone and dura. Bridging veins cause subdural haematomas.

Answer

D · Middle meningeal artery
3.Human physiology

Answer: C · Closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves

Why this is the answer

S1 ("lub") is caused by closure of the atrioventricular valves at the start of systole. S2 ("dub") is closure of the semilunar valves.

Answer

C · Closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves
4.Human physiology

Answer: B · Metabolic alkalosis

Why this is the answer

Vomiting removes HCl, and the stomach's acid secretion leaves bicarbonate in the blood. Volume loss and low potassium help keep the alkalosis going.

Answer

B · Metabolic alkalosis
5.Biology for nursing entrance exams

Answer: D · Prophase

Why this is the answer

In prophase the chromosomes coil up and become visible, the nuclear envelope breaks down and the spindle starts to form. In telophase the reverse happens.

Answer

D · Prophase
6.Biology for nursing entrance exams

Answer: B · A few bacteria already carry resistance genes, survive the drug and multiply

Why this is the answer

Random mutations or acquired genes make some bacteria resistant. The antibiotic kills the others, so the resistant ones survive and reproduce, and the population changes.

Answer

B · A few bacteria already carry resistance genes, survive the drug and multiply
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Answer: D · It increases

Why this is the answer

Across a period the nuclear charge rises while the shell stays the same, so electrons are held more tightly and are harder to remove. Ionisation energy therefore increases.

Answer

D · It increases
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Answer: B · More protons pull the electrons of the same outer shell closer

Why this is the answer

Across a period, each element has one more proton but its outer electrons are in the same shell with similar shielding. The stronger nuclear charge pulls the electrons in, so the atom gets smaller.

Answer

B · More protons pull the electrons of the same outer shell closer
