1Formulas and methods

Biology for nursing entrance exams

Method

  1. Name the topic of the question: cell parts, transport, division, DNA and protein synthesis, inheritance, biomolecules, microorganisms or experimental design.
  2. Recall the key rule: A–T and G–C, diffusion from high to low, water moves towards more solute, mitosis keeps and meiosis halves the chromosome number.
  3. For crosses, write the parents’ genotypes, list the gametes and fill a Punnett square before counting.
  4. For experiments, label the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and ask whether the evidence supports or only suggests the conclusion.
  5. Check each option against the question asked, not just whether it is a true statement.

Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Method

  1. Identify what is given and asked: particles, a formula, a state change, a concentration, a pH or a mass.
  2. Use the periodic table: the atomic number gives protons, the group gives valence electrons and the usual ion charge.
  3. Balance equations with coefficients only, element by element, oxygen and hydrogen last.
  4. For amounts, go mass → moles → mole ratio → moles → mass, and for solutions use M = mol/L and C₁V₁ = C₂V₂.
  5. Remember that pH is logarithmic: one unit is a factor of 10.

2Practice problems

1.Human anatomyMedium

Which cranial nerve controls most of the muscles of facial expression?

  1. AOculomotor nerve (III)
  2. BFacial nerve (VII)
  3. CTrigeminal nerve (V)
  4. DHypoglossal nerve (XII)
2.Human anatomyHard

Which ligament of the knee prevents the tibia from sliding forward relative to the femur?

  1. AAnterior cruciate ligament
  2. BMedial collateral ligament
  3. CPosterior cruciate ligament
  4. DPatellar ligament
3.Human physiologyMedium

Why do myelinated axons conduct action potentials faster than unmyelinated ones?

  1. AMyelin makes the axon thinner
  2. BThe impulse jumps between nodes of Ranvier
  3. CMyelin contains more sodium channels
  4. DMyelin releases neurotransmitter along the axon
4.Human physiologyHard

A patient with diabetic ketoacidosis breathes deeply and rapidly. What pattern is expected on the blood gas?

  1. ALow pH, normal bicarbonate and high PaCO₂
  2. BHigh pH, low bicarbonate and low PaCO₂
  3. CLow pH, low bicarbonate and low PaCO₂
  4. DLow pH, high bicarbonate and high PaCO₂
5.Biology for nursing entrance examsMedium

Why must human gametes be haploid?

  1. ASo that the zygote has the normal number of 46 chromosomes
  2. BSo that the zygote has twice the normal number of chromosomes
  3. CSo that the gametes can make more proteins
  4. DSo that the gametes can divide quickly by mitosis
6.Biology for nursing entrance examsHard

A pesticide that is not broken down is sprayed on crops. Later, hawks at the top of the food chain have much higher levels of it than the insects. Why?

  1. AHawks make the pesticide in their own bodies
  2. BEach predator eats many prey, so the pesticide builds up at each level
  3. CThe pesticide is broken down faster in insects than in plants
  4. DHawks eat the crops directly, so they take in the most pesticide of all
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsMedium

According to the Brønsted–Lowry definition, what is an acid?

  1. AA proton (H⁺) acceptor
  2. BA proton (H⁺) donor
  3. CAn electron pair donor
  4. DA hydroxide ion donor
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsHard

What is the oxidation number of manganese in potassium permanganate, KMnO₄?

  1. A+1
  2. B+4
  3. C−1
  4. D+7

3Solutions

1.Human anatomy

Answer: B · Facial nerve (VII)

Why this is the answer

The facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) supplies the muscles of facial expression. Damage causes facial palsy, as in Bell's palsy.

Answer

B · Facial nerve (VII)
2.Human anatomy

Answer: A · Anterior cruciate ligament

Why this is the answer

The anterior cruciate ligament limits anterior translation of the tibia; a positive anterior drawer or Lachman test suggests an ACL tear.

Answer

A · Anterior cruciate ligament
3.Human physiology

Answer: B · The impulse jumps between nodes of Ranvier

Why this is the answer

Myelin insulates the axon, so action potentials are only generated at the nodes of Ranvier. This saltatory conduction is much faster.

Answer

B · The impulse jumps between nodes of Ranvier
4.Human physiology

Answer: C · Low pH, low bicarbonate and low PaCO₂

Why this is the answer

Ketoacids consume bicarbonate, causing metabolic acidosis. Kussmaul breathing lowers PaCO₂ as respiratory compensation.

Answer

C · Low pH, low bicarbonate and low PaCO₂
5.Biology for nursing entrance exams

Answer: A · So that the zygote has the normal number of 46 chromosomes

Why this is the answer

Each gamete carries 23 chromosomes. When egg and sperm fuse, the zygote gets 46. If gametes were diploid, the chromosome number would double each generation.

Answer

A · So that the zygote has the normal number of 46 chromosomes
6.Biology for nursing entrance exams

Answer: B · Each predator eats many prey, so the pesticide builds up at each level

Why this is the answer

A stable pesticide is stored in the body rather than excreted. Each organism at a higher level eats many organisms from the level below, so the concentration rises along the food chain. This is how DDT harmed birds of prey.

Answer

B · Each predator eats many prey, so the pesticide builds up at each level
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Answer: B · A proton (H⁺) donor

Why this is the answer

A Brønsted–Lowry acid donates a proton (H⁺) and a base accepts one. This definition covers reactions that do not involve OH⁻.

Answer

B · A proton (H⁺) donor
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams

Answer: D · +7

Why this is the answer

(+1) + Mn + 4(−2) = 0, so 1 + Mn − 8 = 0 and Mn = +7. Permanganate is a strong oxidising agent.

Answer

D · +7
