1Formulas and methods
Biology for nursing entrance exams
Method
- Name the topic of the question: cell parts, transport, division, DNA and protein synthesis, inheritance, biomolecules, microorganisms or experimental design.
- Recall the key rule: A–T and G–C, diffusion from high to low, water moves towards more solute, mitosis keeps and meiosis halves the chromosome number.
- For crosses, write the parents’ genotypes, list the gametes and fill a Punnett square before counting.
- For experiments, label the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and ask whether the evidence supports or only suggests the conclusion.
- Check each option against the question asked, not just whether it is a true statement.
Chemistry for nursing entrance exams
Method
- Identify what is given and asked: particles, a formula, a state change, a concentration, a pH or a mass.
- Use the periodic table: the atomic number gives protons, the group gives valence electrons and the usual ion charge.
- Balance equations with coefficients only, element by element, oxygen and hydrogen last.
- For amounts, go mass → moles → mole ratio → moles → mass, and for solutions use M = mol/L and C₁V₁ = C₂V₂.
- Remember that pH is logarithmic: one unit is a factor of 10.
2Practice problems
1.Human anatomyMedium
Which artery is most commonly used to feel the pulse at the wrist?
- AAxillary artery
- BBrachial artery
- CRadial artery
- DUlnar artery
2.Human anatomyHard
Where does the thoracic duct usually empty its lymph into the blood?
- ARight atrium directly
- BJunction of the left subclavian and left internal jugular veins
- CJunction of the right subclavian and right internal jugular veins
- DInferior vena cava at the level of the kidneys
3.Human physiologyMedium
What is the main function of pulmonary surfactant?
- ATo carry oxygen across the alveolar wall
- BTo kill bacteria in the airways
- CTo trap dust in the bronchi
- DTo reduce surface tension in the alveoli
4.Human physiologyHard
Constriction of the efferent arteriole of a glomerulus, with the afferent arteriole unchanged, tends to:
- ALower glomerular capillary pressure and GFR
- BHave no effect on GFR at all
- CRaise glomerular capillary pressure and GFR
- DStop filtration completely
5.Biology for nursing entrance examsMedium
A red blood cell is placed in pure water. What is most likely to happen?
- AIt swells and may burst
- BIt divides into two cells
- CIt shrinks and wrinkles
- DIt stays the same size
6.Biology for nursing entrance examsHard
A breastfed baby receives antibodies from its mother's milk. Why does this protection last only a short time?
- AThe baby's stomach makes the antibodies more active
- BThe baby did not make these antibodies and forms no memory cells
- CThe antibodies turn into memory cells after a few weeks
- DThe antibodies from breast milk attack the baby's own red blood cells
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsMedium
Which type of bond holds the two atoms together in a nitrogen molecule, N₂?
- AA single covalent bond
- BA triple covalent bond
- CA double covalent bond
- DAn ionic bond
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance examsHard
An element in period 3 forms an oxide with the formula X₂O₃. Which element is X?
- APhosphorus
- BSodium
- CMagnesium
- DAluminium
3Solutions
1.Human anatomy
Answer: C · Radial artery
Why this is the answer
The radial artery lies superficially on the thumb side of the wrist, against the radius, which makes the pulse easy to feel.
2.Human anatomy
Answer: B · Junction of the left subclavian and left internal jugular veins
Why this is the answer
The thoracic duct drains lymph from both legs, the abdomen and the left side of the upper body into the left venous angle. The right lymphatic duct drains the rest into the right venous angle.
B · Junction of the left subclavian and left internal jugular veins
3.Human physiology
Answer: D · To reduce surface tension in the alveoli
Why this is the answer
Surfactant, made by type II alveolar cells, lowers surface tension so alveoli do not collapse and the lungs are easier to inflate.
D · To reduce surface tension in the alveoli
4.Human physiology
Answer: C · Raise glomerular capillary pressure and GFR
Why this is the answer
Efferent constriction holds blood in the glomerulus, raising its pressure and GFR. Angiotensin II acts this way, which is why ACE inhibitors can lower GFR.
C · Raise glomerular capillary pressure and GFR
5.Biology for nursing entrance exams
Answer: A · It swells and may burst
Why this is the answer
Water moves into the cell, where the solute concentration is higher. An animal cell has no wall, so it swells and can burst (haemolysis).
A · It swells and may burst
6.Biology for nursing entrance exams
Answer: B · The baby did not make these antibodies and forms no memory cells
Why this is the answer
In passive immunity, ready-made antibodies are received from another source. They are gradually broken down, and since the baby's own immune system did not respond, no memory cells form. Active immunity, from infection or vaccination, lasts longer.
B · The baby did not make these antibodies and forms no memory cells
7.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams
Answer: B · A triple covalent bond
Why this is the answer
Each N shares 3 electrons, giving three shared pairs, a triple bond. This very strong bond is why N₂ gas is so unreactive.
B · A triple covalent bond
8.Chemistry for nursing entrance exams
Answer: D · Aluminium
Why this is the answer
Three O²⁻ ions give 6− in total, so two X ions must give 6+, meaning X³⁺. The period 3 metal that forms 3+ ions is aluminium (group 13), giving Al₂O₃.
