Method

  1. Identify the kind of problem: wave speed, sound level, standing wave, Doppler, refraction, lens or mirror, or interference.
  2. Write the relation first: v = fλ, β = 10·log(I/I₀), fₙ = n·v/(2L) or n·v/(4L), f′ = f(v ± vo)/(v ∓ vs), n₁sin θ₁ = n₂sin θ₂, 1/f = 1/d₀ + 1/dᵢ, d·sin θ = mλ.
  3. Convert units: nm, mm and cm to m, and check whether angles are measured from the normal.
  4. Check signs and plausibility: a virtual image has dᵢ < 0, an approaching source sounds higher, a closed pipe has only odd harmonics.

2Practice problems

1.Springs & pendulumsMedium
t (s)x (cm)0.9 s

A 3.7 kg mass on a spring with k = 90 N/m is pulled 11 cm in the positive direction and released from rest at t = 0. Find its displacement x from equilibrium at t = 0.9 s (with sign).

m = 3.7 kgk = 90 N/mA = 11 cmt = 0.9 s
x = cm
2.Springs & pendulumsHard
1.9 kgk = 280 N/mA = 2 cm

A 1.9 kg mass on a spring with k = 280 N/m is pulled 2 cm from equilibrium and released. Find its maximum acceleration amax.

m = 1.9 kgk = 280 N/mA = 2 cm
amax = m/s²
3.Waves, sound & opticsMedium
L = ?n = 5

A pipe closed at one end must have its harmonic number 5 at 429 Hz. The speed of sound is 343 m/s. Find the length L of the pipe.

v = 343 m/sn = 5f5 = 429 Hz
L = m
4.Waves, sound & opticsHard
λ = 589 nmd = 0.15 mmL = 1.5 m

Light of wavelength 589 nm falls on two slits 0.15 mm apart. The screen is 1.5 m away. Find the spacing Δy between neighbouring bright fringes.

λ = 589 nmd = 0.15 mmL = 1.5 m
Δy = mm

3Solutions

1.Springs & pendulums

Answer: x = −2.972 cm

Simple harmonic motion: a mass m on a spring of stiffness k oscillates with angular frequency ω = √(k/m) and period T = 2π/ω = 2π·√(m/k). A simple pendulum of length L has T = 2π·√(L/g). With amplitude A, the largest speed is A·ω, the largest acceleration A·ω² and the energy ½·k·A².

Angular frequency

ω = √(90/3.7) = 4.932 rad/s
ω·t = 4.932·0.9 = 4.439 rad

Displacement

x = A·cos(ω·t) = 11·cos(4.439) = −2.972 cm

Answer

x = −2.972 cm
2.Springs & pendulums

Answer: amax = 2.947 m/s²

Simple harmonic motion: a mass m on a spring of stiffness k oscillates with angular frequency ω = √(k/m) and period T = 2π/ω = 2π·√(m/k). A simple pendulum of length L has T = 2π·√(L/g). With amplitude A, the largest speed is A·ω, the largest acceleration A·ω² and the energy ½·k·A².

Angular frequency

ω = √(280/1.9) = 12.14 rad/s

Maximum acceleration

amax = A·ω² = 0.02·12.14² = 2.947 m/s²

Answer

amax = 2.947 m/s²
3.Waves, sound & optics

Answer: L = 0.9994 m

Standing waves and the Doppler effect: a string fixed at both ends, or a pipe open at both ends, fits whole half-wavelengths: L = nλ/2, fn = n·v/(2L), n = 1, 2, 3, … A pipe closed at one end has a node at the closed end and an antinode at the open end: L = nλ/4 with odd n only, fn = n·v/(4L). When source or observer move along the line between them, f′ = f·(v ± vo)/(v ∓ vs): use the upper signs for motion towards each other. Two waves of nearly equal frequency beat at |f₁ − f₂|.

Wavelength

λ = v/f = 343/429 = 0.7995 m

Length

L = nλ/4 = 5·0.7995/4 = 0.9994 m

Answer

L = 0.9994 m
4.Waves, sound & optics

Answer: Δy = 5.89 mm

Interference and diffraction: light from two slits a distance d apart reaches a point on the screen with a path difference d·sin θ. Bright fringes appear where d·sin θ = mλ (m = 0, ±1, ±2, …). For a screen at distance L ≫ d, the m-th bright fringe is at y = mλL/d and the fringe spacing is Δy = λL/d. A grating with N lines per millimetre has d = 1/N and sharp maxima at d·sin θ = mλ; since sin θ ≤ 1, the highest order is the largest whole number m ≤ d/λ. A single slit of width a has dark fringes at a·sin θ = mλ, m = ±1, ±2, …

Fringe spacing

Δy = λL/d = 589 × 10⁻⁹·1.5/(0.15 × 10⁻³) = 5.89 mm

Answer

Δy = 5.89 mm
