A thermometer reading of 39 °C (102.2 °F) is described as a high fever in the nurse’s notes. The next morning, the reading is 37 °C (98.6 °F). What does this suggest?
“Despite years of warnings, the town did not repair the old dam. When the storm came, the water broke through and flooded the valley.” What is the author most likely suggesting?
Choose the correct word: “To ___ should I address this letter?”
What is the function of the underlined phrase? “Exhausted after the long shift, the nurse fell asleep.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The patient’s lungs sounded congested.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The wound edges were approximated with sutures.”
答え: D · The patient’s fever has come down.
The temperature fell from 39 °C (a high fever) to 37 °C, which is close to normal, so the fever has come down.
答え: B · The flood could probably have been prevented.
Mentioning years of ignored warnings suggests the damage might have been avoided if the dam had been repaired.
答え: B · whom
After a preposition, use the object form “whom” (as you would say “him”). “Who” is the subject form.
答え: B · A participial phrase describing “the nurse”
“Exhausted after the long shift” is a participial phrase that acts as an adjective and modifies “the nurse”, which comes right after the comma.
答え: A · Filled with fluid or mucus
Congested means overfilled or blocked, here with fluid or mucus.
答え: D · Brought close together
In medicine, to approximate wound edges is to bring them together so the wound can heal. In everyday use it can also mean “estimate”.
