Passage: “Cycling to work saves money on fuel and parking. It also gives regular exercise and produces no exhaust fumes.” Which title fits the passage best?
A report states: “Since the hospital began offering flu vaccines to all staff, staff sick days in winter have fallen by a third. Other hospitals in the region did not see this drop.” Why is the second sentence important?
Choose the correct verb: “Neither the doctor nor the nurses ___ available.”
Which sentence uses the correct word order for an indirect question?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The dehydrated patient had poor skin turgor.”
Choose the meaning of the words in bold: “The abdominal pain was localised rather than diffuse.”
答え: A · Benefits of Cycling to Work
Every sentence gives an advantage of cycling to work, so “Benefits of Cycling to Work” fits best.
答え: C · It makes a general winter change an unlikely cause.
If sick days had fallen everywhere, a mild winter might explain it. Because other hospitals did not see the drop, the vaccine is a more likely cause.
答え: D · are
With “neither … nor” or “either … or”, the verb agrees with the nearer subject. “Nurses” is plural, so “are” is correct.
答え: D · Can you tell me where the pharmacy is?
An indirect question uses subject + verb order: “where the pharmacy is”, not “where is the pharmacy”.
答え: D · Elasticity and fullness
Turgor is the normal fullness and elasticity of the skin; poor turgor is a sign of dehydration.
答え: B · Limited to one area, not widespread
Localised means confined to one place, while diffuse means spread over a wide area.
