“I watched as Mrs. Grey slowly climbed the steps, stopping on each one to catch her breath. ‘She’s getting older,’ I thought sadly.” From which point of view is the story told?
“When Aunt Rose saw the broken vase, she said, ‘Well, I never liked that vase anyway,’ and gave her nervous nephew a wink.” Why did Aunt Rose most likely say this?
Choose the correct word: “She speaks Spanish as ___ as her teacher.”
Which sentence correctly punctuates an essential (restrictive) appositive?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The patient was reluctant to take the new medicine.”
Which word is closest in meaning to concur?
答え: B · First person, by a narrator who observes
The narrator uses “I” and shares their own thoughts while watching Mrs. Grey, so it is first person told by an observer. We never get Mrs. Grey’s own thoughts.
答え: C · To put her nephew at ease
The wink and her light remark suggest she wanted to calm her nervous nephew rather than scold him.
答え: C · fluently
“As … as” uses the base form of the adjective or adverb. Because it describes how she speaks, the adverb “fluently” is needed.
答え: C · The novelist Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize.
The name is needed to identify which of many novelists is meant, so it is essential and takes no commas. Commas would suggest there is only one novelist.
答え: C · Unwilling
Reluctant means unwilling and hesitant to do something.
答え: B · Agree
To concur is to agree or have the same opinion.
