公式集、全トピックの解法の要点、6 問の演習問題。完全な解答は巻末にあります。
A patient handout says: “Call the clinic if your temperature rises above 38.5 °C (101.3 °F), if the wound becomes red and swollen, or if you notice any discharge.” Which situation should lead the patient to call?
“Only 30 minutes after taking the new pill, I felt better,” said one customer in an advertisement. “It must be the best headache pill ever made.” Why is this weak evidence that the pill works?
Which sentence contains a misplaced modifier?
Choose the correct verb: “By next June, she ___ her nursing degree.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The nurse noticed a tremor in the patient’s hands.”
What does the term haematemesis mean?
答え: B · The wound becomes red and swollen.
Redness and swelling of the wound is one of the listed warning signs. A temperature of 37.0 °C (98.6 °F) is below the 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) limit.
答え: B · It is one person’s experience, not a controlled study.
A single testimonial cannot show that the pill caused the improvement. Headaches often ease on their own, so a controlled study with many people is needed.
答え: C · She served sandwiches to the children on paper plates.
Placing “on paper plates” right after “children” makes it seem the children sat on the plates. The modifier should be next to “sandwiches”.
答え: C · will have completed
The future perfect (will have + past participle) shows an action that will be complete before a specific future time.
答え: D · Involuntary shaking
A tremor is an involuntary, rhythmic shaking of a body part.
答え: A · Vomiting blood
Haematemesis (US: hematemesis) is the vomiting of blood; coughing up blood is haemoptysis.
