“The hikers had planned to reach the summit by noon. But when dark clouds gathered and the wind grew stronger, the leader turned the group around.” Why did the leader turn the group around?
In the sentence “The patient’s condition deteriorated rapidly overnight, so the team moved her to intensive care,” what does “deteriorated” most likely mean?
Choose the correct word: “The flowers smell ___.”
Choose the correct verb: “When I arrived, the patient ___ for an hour.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The infection is latent and causes no symptoms now.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “Prophylactic antibiotics were given before surgery.”
答え: B · The weather was becoming dangerous.
Dark clouds and a stronger wind signal a worsening, possibly dangerous storm, so the leader turned back for safety.
答え: C · Became worse
Moving the patient to intensive care suggests her condition became worse.
答え: A · sweet
After a linking verb, use an adjective that describes the subject. The flowers are sweet, so “sweet” is correct.
答え: D · had been waiting
The past perfect progressive (had been + -ing) shows an action that continued up to another past event, here “when I arrived”.
答え: B · Present but not active or visible
Latent means present but hidden or inactive, like a virus that stays dormant in the body.
答え: D · Given to prevent disease
Prophylactic means preventive; prophylactic antibiotics lower the risk of infection after surgery.
