A clinic newsletter states: “Starting next month, patients can request repeat prescriptions online. Requests will be ready to collect within two working days.” If a patient submits a request online on Monday, when is the prescription most likely ready?
“The new manager listened to every complaint, thanked staff for raising them and posted a list of changes the following week.” What can be inferred about the manager?
Choose the correct pronoun: “The test was harder for my brother than for ___.”
Which sentence would work best as a thesis statement for an essay?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The medicine is very potent, so the dose is small.”
Which word is closest in meaning to alleviate?
答え: D · By Wednesday
Counting two working days after Monday (Tuesday, then Wednesday) gives Wednesday. “Later the same day” is too soon.
答え: A · The manager takes staff concerns seriously.
Listening, thanking staff and acting quickly with a list of changes show that the manager takes concerns seriously.
答え: B · me
The object of a preposition takes the object form, so “for me” is correct, just as “for my brother” is.
答え: C · Hospitals should limit nurses’ shifts to twelve hours to reduce fatigue-related errors.
A thesis statement states a clear, arguable main point. A makes a specific claim with a reason; the others are facts, announcements or vague statements.
答え: D · Powerful
Potent means strong and effective, so a small amount has a large effect.
答え: A · Relieve
To alleviate is to make suffering or a problem less severe, which is to relieve it.
