“Every morning, Mr. Patel opened his bakery at 5 a.m. By 7 a.m., a line of customers stretched down the street.” What can you infer about the bakery?
The author writes: “If we let students use calculators in maths class, soon they will forget how to add, then they won’t be able to manage money, and eventually our economy will collapse.” What type of flawed reasoning is this?
Which sentence punctuates “such as” correctly?
Which sentence has correct parallel structure in a comparison?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The surgeon will excise the mole.”
What does the term haematoma mean?
答え: B · It is popular with many customers.
A long line of customers each morning suggests that the bakery is popular. Nothing hints that it is closing or what it sells.
答え: D · An exaggerated chain of consequences
The author claims one small step will lead to extreme results without evidence for each link. This is a “slippery slope” argument.
答え: D · Bring supplies such as gauze, tape and gloves.
No colon or comma comes after “such as”; the examples follow it directly. A colon would split the phrase from the words it introduces.
答え: D · Reading the chart is easier than guessing the dose.
In A both sides of the comparison are gerund phrases (reading, guessing). The other choices mix gerunds, infinitives and nouns.
答え: B · Cut out
To excise is to remove by cutting out.
答え: A · A collection of blood in the tissues
A haematoma (US: hematoma) is a localised collection of clotted blood outside the vessels, such as a large bruise.
