“Water covers about 71 percent of Earth’s surface. Most of that water is salt water in the oceans. Only a small share is fresh water, and much of it is frozen in ice caps and glaciers.” What can you conclude from the passage?
“Emma had practised her speech for weeks. When she stood before the crowd, her hands trembled, but her voice came out clear and strong.” Which statement best describes Emma at that moment?
Which sentence uses a comma correctly between adjectives?
Which revision eliminates the redundancy? “The two twins were identical in appearance and looked exactly alike.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “Long-term use of some painkillers can cause a stomach ulcer.”
What does the term hyperlipidaemia mean?
答え: B · Fresh liquid water is only a small part of Earth’s water.
Most water is salty, only a small share is fresh, and much of that is frozen, so liquid fresh water is a small part of the total.
答え: A · Nervous inside but still able to speak well
Trembling hands show nerves, but her clear voice shows she still spoke well. Her weeks of practice rule out being unprepared.
答え: B · It was a long, tiring shift.
“Long” and “tiring” are coordinate adjectives (long and tiring), so a comma separates them. No comma goes between the last adjective and the noun.
答え: D · The twins looked exactly alike.
A removes the repeated ideas: “two” is implied by “twins”, and “identical in appearance” repeats “looked exactly alike”.
答え: D · An open sore
An ulcer is an open sore on the skin or on a mucous membrane, such as the stomach lining.
答え: D · High levels of fat in the blood
Hyperlipidaemia (US: hyperlipidemia) is a raised level of lipids, such as cholesterol, in the blood.
