Why are patients on long-term corticosteroids at higher risk from infections?
- ASteroids kill the patient’s normal skin bacteria
- BSteroids suppress the immune response and can hide signs of infection
- CSteroids make the patient’s blood more acidic, which helps bacteria grow
- DSteroids only affect the risk of fungal skin rashes
A patient after heart surgery has temporary epicardial pacing wires. Why do staff take special care with electrical safety?
- APacing wires can only carry current coming from the pacemaker box itself
- BElectrical safety only matters for patients who have permanent implanted pacemakers
- CThe wires make the patient immune to electric shock
- DSmall currents can travel along the wires straight to the heart and cause arrhythmias
A small blood spill is found on the ward floor. What is the correct approach?
- ALeave it for the domestic staff to clean at the end of the day
- BWear gloves and an apron and clean it with an approved disinfectant per policy
- CWipe it up with a paper towel without gloves, then wash your hands well afterwards
- DCover it with a sheet so no one steps in it
- AMycoplasma pneumoniae
- BCorynebacterium diphtheriae
- CHaemophilus influenzae
- DBordetella pertussis
B · Steroids suppress the immune response and can hide signs of infection
Corticosteroids reduce white cell activity and inflammation, so infections develop more easily and may cause less fever or redness. Nurses watch closely for subtle signs.
B · Steroids suppress the immune response and can hide signs of infection
D · Small currents can travel along the wires straight to the heart and cause arrhythmias
Wires that lead directly to the heart allow tiny currents (microshock) to reach the myocardium and cause ventricular fibrillation. Staff wear gloves when handling them, cover exposed ends and use properly grounded equipment.
D · Small currents can travel along the wires straight to the heart and cause arrhythmias
B · Wear gloves and an apron and clean it with an approved disinfectant per policy
Under standard precautions all blood is handled as potentially infectious. Spills are cleaned promptly using PPE and the spill kit or disinfectant set out in local policy.
B · Wear gloves and an apron and clean it with an approved disinfectant per policy
D · Bordetella pertussis
Bordetella pertussis
