“The new teacher wrote her name on the board, smiled and said, ‘Let’s start by learning one interesting fact about each of you.’” What can you infer about the teacher’s goal?
“Patient A’s heart rate: 72 at 8 a.m., 74 at noon, 71 at 4 p.m. Patient B’s heart rate: 70 at 8 a.m., 95 at noon, 118 at 4 p.m.” Which patient should the nurse be more concerned about, and why?
Choose the correct word: “___ been a long day for the staff.”
Which revision corrects the misplaced modifier? “We saw a deer driving to the hospital.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “Pain is a subjective symptom.”
Choose the word that best completes the sentence: “His symptoms ___ after he started the antibiotic, and he soon felt much better.”
答案: D · She wants to get to know her students.
Asking for an interesting fact about each student shows she wants to get to know them.
答案: D · Patient B, because the rate is rising steadily.
Patient A’s rate stays fairly steady, while Patient B’s climbs from 70 to 118. A steadily rising heart rate is a change that needs attention.
答案: D · It’s
“It’s” can mean “it is” or “it has”. Here “It has been a long day” makes sense, so the contraction is needed.
答案: B · While driving to the hospital, we saw a deer.
In the original, the deer seems to be driving. A places the modifier next to “we”. C creates a dangling modifier, and D keeps the absurd meaning.
答案: A · Based on the patient’s own experience
Subjective information comes from the patient’s own feelings and report, so it cannot be measured directly.
答案: D · abated
To abate is to become less intense or widespread.
