“After the hospital put hand sanitiser by every bed, staff used it far more often, and infection rates on the ward fell.” What can be reasonably concluded?
The author writes: “Our survey found that 9 out of 10 dentists recommend chewing gum.” The survey was paid for by a chewing gum company and asked only 10 dentists. Why should a reader be cautious about this claim?
Choose the correct verb: “Ham and cheese ___ my favourite sandwich.”
In which sentence is “their” used correctly?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The toddler may have ingested a cleaning product.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The surgeon explained that the tumour was inoperable.”
答案: D · Easier access may have improved hand hygiene.
Placing sanitiser close by led to more frequent use, and infections fell. It is reasonable to say easier access may have helped, but not that it is the only way.
答案: C · The sample is tiny and the sponsor has an interest.
A sample of 10 is too small to generalise from, and a gum company has a reason to want a positive result, so the claim may be biased.
答案: D · is
When two nouns joined by “and” name one thing or idea, the subject is treated as singular, so the verb is “is”.
答案: D · The students handed in their reports.
“Their reports” shows possession. The others need “they’re” (they are) or “there” (a place or “there is”).
答案: A · Swallowed
To ingest is to take something into the body by swallowing it.
答案: B · Unable to be treated by surgery
Inoperable means that surgery cannot be used to remove or treat the problem safely.
