Some birds, such as Arctic terns, migrate thousands of kilometres every year. Scientists think birds find their way using the sun, the stars and Earth’s magnetic field. Which word best describes the scientists’ explanation?
“When the reporter asked the mayor about the delayed bridge project, the mayor talked at length about the new park and the town’s low crime rate.” What does the mayor’s answer suggest?
Which sentence uses the correct verb tense consistently?
Which revision fixes the comma splice by making one clause dependent? “The alarm sounded, the staff moved patients to safety.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The nurse noted pallor of the patient’s face and lips.”
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The older patient had orthostatic hypotension.”
答案: A · Uncertain
“Scientists think” shows the explanation is a likely idea, not something fully proven.
答案: B · The mayor avoided the question.
Speaking at length about other topics instead of the bridge suggests that the mayor was avoiding the question.
答案: C · She opened the window and sat down.
Actions in the same time frame keep the same tense. Both verbs in the first sentence are in the simple past.
答案: D · When the alarm sounded, the staff moved patients to safety.
B, C and D also fix the comma splice, but they keep both clauses independent. Only A adds the subordinating conjunction “when”, which makes the first clause dependent.
答案: A · Unusual paleness
Pallor is an unusual paleness of the skin, often seen with anaemia or shock.
答案: A · Related to standing upright
Orthostatic hypotension is a drop in blood pressure when a person stands up, which can cause dizziness and falls.
