“The FAST test helps people spot a stroke: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services.” What does the letter T stand for?
Paragraph 1 describes how tooth decay is caused by bacteria feeding on sugar. Paragraph 2 describes how fluoride makes teeth more resistant to acid. Paragraph 3 recommends brushing with fluoride toothpaste and limiting sugary snacks. How is the passage organised?
Which sentence punctuates “however” correctly in the middle of a clause?
Which sentence uses “e.g.” correctly?
What does the suffix -emia (or -aemia) mean, as in “anaemia”?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “Obesity is a predisposing factor for type 2 diabetes.”
答案: D · Time to call emergency services
In FAST, T stands for “Time to call emergency services”, because quick treatment of a stroke is vital.
答案: B · Cause and protection, then advice
The passage explains a cause (bacteria and sugar), a protection (fluoride) and then gives recommendations based on both.
答案: A · The test, however, was easier than expected.
When “however” interrupts a single clause, it is set off with a pair of commas. A semicolon is used only when “however” joins two independent clauses.
答案: C · Bring a healthy snack, e.g., fruit or nuts.
“e.g.” is written with two full stops, follows a comma and comes right before the examples. “i.e.” (that is) would restate rather than give examples.
答案: D · A condition of the blood
-emia refers to a blood condition: hyperglycaemia is high blood sugar, anaemia a lack of red cells or haemoglobin.
答案: B · Making a person more likely to develop it
A predisposing factor increases susceptibility. It does not guarantee the disease will develop.
