“Although the hiking trail was steep and rocky, the view from the top made the climb worthwhile.” What does the author suggest?
The author writes: “A famous actor says she uses Glow cream every day, so it must be good for your skin.” Why is this weak evidence?
Which sentence uses the plural “doctors” correctly?
In which sentence is the underlined -ing word a participle (used as an adjective) rather than a gerund?
Choose the meaning of the word in bold: “The patient’s blood pressure was labile throughout the night.”
What does the term lithotripsy mean?
答案: A · The view was worth the difficult climb.
The sentence admits the trail was hard but says the view made it worthwhile, so the reward outweighed the effort.
答案: A · Fame is not expertise in skin care.
Being famous does not make someone an expert on skin care, and she may be paid to promote it. This is an appeal to a celebrity, not real evidence.
答案: D · Three doctors joined the team.
An apostrophe shows possession or a contraction, not a plural. “Doctors” is the plain plural of “doctor”.
答案: B · The crying baby needed a feeding.
In A, “crying” describes the noun “baby”, so it is a participle. In B, C and D the -ing word acts as a noun (subject, object or subject complement), so it is a gerund.
答案: C · Changing quickly and often
Labile means unstable and easily changed, for example a blood pressure that keeps going up and down.
答案: C · Crushing of stones
Lithotripsy breaks up stones, such as kidney stones, often using shock waves from outside the body.
